Ethics Board
The Ethics Board will revise the essential documents and procedures dealing with ethical aspects such as (but not limited to) documents for the ECs, Consent and Assent Forms, protocols, results and reports from the studies. In particular, it suggests interventions aimed to protect children’s well-being both in the European and non-European Countries and the use of studies results in favour of the affected populations. In addition, the Ethics Board will work in collaboration with the Data Safety Monitoring Committee on all aspects of data protection and confidentiality.
The DEEP Ethics Board is under the responsibility of FGB.

Hugo Devlieger
Hugo Devlieger graduated as a MD at the Catholic University of Leuven in 1967, obtained a degree in Tropical Medicine in Antwerp (Belgium) and trained as a surgeon, before being appointed as doctor in the reference hospitals of Gisenyi, later of Rwamagana Rwanda. In 1973 he started a training in pediatrics in Leuven, and in neonatology in Bristol (UK) and Toronto (Canada). Back in Leuven, at the University Hospital Gasthuisberg he obtained a PhD in Biomedical science and became head of the department of Neonatology in 1987. He became professor in Pediatrics and neonatology in 1994 until his retirement in 2007. From 2007-2010, he was delegate of Belgium at the Paediatric Committee of the EMA in London. He is still visiting professor in the University of Kisangani (RDCongo) and is in charge of Rwandan developmental projects in maternal and child health care. He is member of the Executive Committee of UNICEF Belgium since 2012.

George Papanikolaou
Dr George Papanikolaou (MD, PhD) studied medicine and specialised in internal medicine in the First Department of Medicine at the University of Athens. He has studied iron metabolism since 1998 and his research work is focused in genetics of iron overload diseases including the genetic basis of hereditary hemochromatosis. He has worked in the pharmaceutical industry and gained experience in coordinating multinational clinical studies in the fields of haematology and rheumatology. Since 2009 he is a Lecturer in the Department of Dietetics and Nutritional Science at Harokopion University in Athens Greece. He is currently teaching genetics and pathophysiology. His research interests include iron metabolism and chemical senses.

Lamis Ragab
Dr. Ragab graduated in 1976 from the Faculty of Medicine (Excellent with Honors). After a three year- pediatric-residency she obtained a master degree in 1980 and a doctorate degree in pediatrics in 1984. She served since then as a lecturer of pediatrics, assistant professor, and full professor from 1995 till present. She also fulfilled a Masters of Health Profession Education in 2005. She was the vice director of the Medical Education Development Center in (2005-2006), the Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research from 2006 till 2011, and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University, during the year of the Egyptian revolution. Since 2007 she is the vice president of the Research Ethical Committee at the Faculty. She is currently the Dean of Education at the new Armed Forces College of Medicine. She supervised 48 master and doctorate theses and published more than 50 papers in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology. Dr. Ragab has a long-standing experience in the Area of Quality Assurance in education. Her Professional Memberships include several scientific committees and non-governmental organizations. Since 2001, she is participating in several clinical trials, mainly in pediatric hematology. She is currently the PI of two ongoing trials, and member of the advisory board of RAMSES project, an FP7 project funded by the EU.
