University Hospital Center “Mother Teresa” – National Hemoglobinopathies Center - UHCT

The University Hospital Center “Mother Teresa” National hemoglobinopathies Center (NHC) in Tirana aims to take care of hemoglobinopathic patients in Albania, treating them with transfusion of pure red blood cells, managing all complications of thalassemia and sickle cell disease’s patients, conducting research, prescribing oral chelation therapy and offering patients psychological care. At the same time the centre provides support to couples with diseased children who wish to have more children, counseling for young carriers etc. The Centre has a broad staff and comprehensive expertise in paediatric treatment, pediatric clinical diseases and medications. It has a considerable number of patients suffering from thalassemia and sickle cell disease and the combination of these two clinical situations (some of them are treated with transfusions and are in need of chelating therapy), with almost 200 patients with hemoglobinopathies, children and adults, currently in treatment.

Main tasks in the project

Within the project, the National Hemoglobinopathies Center will predominantly be involved in a protocol development, patients recruitment and data analysis which is the object of WP4.
