The DEEP project has received research funding from the European Union under the 7th Framework Programme
The Thalassemia Unit of the First Department of Pediatrics of the University of Athens is one of the largest centers for the treatment of patients with thalassemia and other hemoglobinopathies in Greece. More than 360 patients are chronically transfused and more than 500 patients are followed on a regular basis in the unit. The oldest university in Southeast Europe, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens ranked 177th in the world in 2009 (it was 200th on 2008). The unit has pioneered in setting the standards of care in the treatment of thalassemia in Greece and it has contributed significantly in the development of new methods for the evaluation and treatment of iron overload. Many clinical and basic research studies have been completed in the unit and their results published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
