Since 1975 the Clinic of Pediatric Haematology Oncology of the Department of Pediatrics of the University of Padua has been devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of all Haematological and Oncological diseases of children (age 0-18 years). It the referral Centre for North-eastern Italy (Veneto, Friuli, Trentino Alto-Adige). The Clinic hosts a boarding unit (20 beds), a stem cell transplantation unit (6 beds) and a day hospital unit. A Unit for Non-Oncological Haematology has been recently established (February 2010) in close connection with it to focus on the diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired anemias, diseases of platelets and leukocytes and primary immunedeficiencies. Both units are involved in the care of patients affected by thalassemia and haemoglobinopathies. As for Thalassemia Major (Cooley disease), the Unit is the Coordinating Centre for the care of all patients, in both paediatric and in adult ages. Transfusion regimens, chelation treatment, management of haemosiderosis and its complicantions are the main tasks. The haematologic laboratory is involved in the diagnosis of haematological diseases. Flow cytometry, molecular biology and cytogenetics are all available facilities. The clinic is active in the treatment of outpatients with haemoglobinopathies and congenital anemias (Thalassemia major, Thalassemia intermedia, Sickle cell disease sferocytosis); 30 adult patients and 12 children under the age of 18 are currently being followed; research on Cardio Resonance T2* method for heart and liver iron overload (MIOT Network) is currently ongoing.

Main tasks in the project

The AODP Unit will contribute to WP4 and WP5 in the planning and conduction of the randomised, controlled efficacy and safety trial aimed at comparing the efficacy of DFP versus DFO.
